Damian Cudlin’s RAC Racing team has confirmed that brake problems aboard the Australian’s BMW contributed to his shocking high-speed crash at the Red Bull Ring at round four of the IDM German Superbike Championship on the weekend.

Cudlin crashed in the early stages of the second race, making heavy contact with a tyre wall at the Remus Curve.

RAC Racing principal Evert Slager told Speedweek.com the team would analyse the incident further but believed the cause to be a brake problem.

“The exact reason for the crash is not yet clear,” said Slager. “But it was a problem with the brake, with safety. We know by now.

“We looked at our data recording together with the people from technical control. In the graph the brake still worked flawlessly.”

The Red Bull Ring’s series of stop-start corners and hairpins have been the cause of braking problems in the past, and a number of other riders would complain of the issue throughout the weekend.

Cudlin, meanwhile, has left hospital and been cleared of any breakages. He has been left with swelling and bruising to his injured wrist and knee.

“That was the worst weekend of racing I’ve had in a long time,” said Cudlin. “Technical issues in race one, followed by brake failure and a nasty crash in race two.”

“The doctors say nothing’s broken but I’ll get some other opinions this week. Sore and sorry for myself right now!”

Despite the DNF the Australian rider retains his lead of the championship by a narrow four-point margin.
