Fast Thoughts: Matt Walters

We poll the Australian Prostock Championship points leader on a series of topics.

Rover Coaches/Kawasaki Connection/BC Connect ZX-10R rider Matt Walters is enjoying his best ever start to a championship campaign, capably controlling the pace in the competitive Australian Prostock Championship ranks.

We caught up with Matt for a few Fast Thoughts in the break between the Queensland Raceway and Sydney Motorsport Park rounds.

My start to the 2013 Prostock season…
It’s been a good start so far. I’ve had a fair few wins and I’m pretty much on track as to where I wanted to be at this stage. It’s been pretty smooth. I think the Phillip Island weekend was a standout. To win the two races and be on pole for the Prostock class, and get the lap record and the fastest lap was a real highlight. I’d say that’s the best weekend I’ve ever had. It was good to come away from Queensland with the overall and score big points and stay on the bike. This is my best year for results so far, and it’s going to help later in the season so I don’t have to be chasing my tail.

Being a long-time Kawasaki rider…
The ZX-10R is a great bike to race. It does everything that the rider asks. It’s got plenty of power, and is easy to setup – it’s just a great bike out of the box, and easy to win races on. I’ve been riding Kawasaki for as long as I can remember. I’ve had at least 10 years riding dirt track plus the rest of the time on road race bikes. I’ve been a green boy since I was about five or six years old.

Closest rivals in the Prostock class…
I’d say Dustin Goldsmith, Sean Condon and Ben Nicolson, for sure. They’re all really good riders, and all right there at any given time of the race. They’re not going anywhere and I seem them as my main competitors. I enjoy racing against them and can’t wait to get back into the battle next round.

On the ASBK’s return to Sydney Motorsport Park and goals that have been set…
I think it’s really good the ASBK is finally back to Eastern Creek (Sydney Motorsport Park). It’s a good facility, we should use it a lot more often. You always have a good crowd come out to support the racing there. I’d like to be able to go to the next round and have a go at breaking the lap record. Aside from that the goal is to keep collecting those points and building up my championship score.

Where I want to be in road racing…
It’s funny, I haven’t really set a long term goal. I’m seeing where it takes me, and what opportunities arise. I’d eventually like to have a ride in the World Superbike paddock or even the MotoGP, but for now I’m focusing on results in this class. I’m happy with my progress so far, and how we’re going this year. I’d like to continue along this path with Kawasaki and keep racking up the wins.
