Josh Brookes believes his experience in road racing and WEC testing may aid his British Superbike campaign.

Australian rider Josh Brookes believes an increased and more varied range of riding assignments in 2013 may provide him with a previously-undiscovered edge on a motorcycle as he seeks to break his win drought in the British Superbike field.

The Tyco Suzuki rider will line up at Brands Hatch this weekend as a leading contender for race wins once more, and he’s eager to stop the run of points leader Shane Byrne and second-placed rider Alex Lowes.

Brookes has found himself in contention for wins in a number of races but has lost the lead through a variety of circumstances, including a number of safety car interruptions.

In 2013 the versatile rider branched out to compete in his first Isle of Man TT, along with joining Yoshimura Suzuki in their campaign for success in the Suzuka 8 Hour.

“I think coming back from Suzuka, where I was testing with the Yoshimura team prior to next week’s 8 Hour, might help that, as I have learned some stuff about myself and also about adapting on a motorbike, by riding on a different machine; and on different tyres,” said Brookes.

“It’s maybe five or six years now that I’ve been on Pirelli and adapted to them. You don’t get complacent, but you get into a rut and stop experimenting and the learning process slows down because you get so familiar with the product.

“Jumping over to ride the roads and the TT on Metzeler tyres, and going to Suzuka on different tyres again; as much as it is so different to short-circuit racing in the British Superbike Championship, there are elements that I can use from those experiences – especially Japan – that make me eager to see if I can put them into practice and possibly benefit my BSB campaign.”

Brookes heads to round six, which will be run on the GP circuit, just two points shy of Lowes. Byrne, who has captured the bulk of race wins this season, is a further 32 points down the road.

“I want to start beating Shakey (Byrne) as it’s driving me nuts not being able to be more competitive,” added the Aussie. “He has created this aura that he’s unbeatable around Brands, so if I can beat him this weekend, hopefully it can break his strategy and pattern running into the next few races.

“Of course it’s easier said than done, but that’s my motivation. I want to get to Brands this weekend and start turning things around.”
