Multiple MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi plans to see out his career as a Yamaha factory rider, indicating he will retire from the sport at the end of 2016.

Rossi is looking for a contract extension from the brand at the end of 2014 that will see him compete for a further two years.

With 80 premier class grand prix wins under his belt, Rossi aims to remain racing while he is still able to contest for victories.

“My plan is to stay competitive with the Yamaha,” he told German outlet Speedweek. “I want to stay at a level where I can fight to the podium and the victory, as since Assen.

“After the 2014 season I will make a new contract with Yamaha for two years. By the end of 2016, when Yamaha agrees, in the factory team. Afterwards, I think it’s enough.”

With 106 total grand prix victories – 125cc, 250cc and 500cc/MotoGP considered – the Italian is a chance at overtaking countryman Giacomo Agostini who won 122 races in his esteemed career.

“I want to reach Agostini’s record 122 GP wins – at least I want to scare him a little!” said Rossi.

He is also a chance to become the oldest MotoGP winner of the modern era if he scores a victory towards the latter stages of 2016.

The current record stands with Australia’s own Troy Bayliss, who won at Valencia in a guest ride with Ducati when he was 37.

Post motorcycle racing, Rossi hopes to pursue a passion for four wheels, citing an interest in GT, touring car or rally.
