Fast Thoughts: Daniel Falzon

We poll the Australian Supersport Championship points leader on a number of topics.

Reigning Australian Superstock Champion Daniel Falzon has been a revelation in the Supersport ranks in 2013, leading the championship after the first round and maintaining the advantage heading into the series’ penultimate event at Hidden Valley.

On the merging of the Superstock and Supersport classes for 2013…

I absolutely love how they’ve merged the two classes. I think it creates a much bigger grid, it’s better from every aspect really. The spectators get a much better race, our races look a lot more professional with the bigger grids. There’s a lot of people that were in Superstock 600 that you could have put up with the Supersport last year so it’s good to have us all in one race as it really does show who the fastest 600cc riders in Australia are.

My performance at Sydney Motorsport Park…

We were very happy with race one. We were able to get the tyres working well. Then came race two, and it was a bit more difficult. I think other riders chose different tyres and possibly made some better decisions than us. But we’re still happy to come away with that second position overall for round four. As for round five, it was quite similar. We didn’t manage to get a race win but to stay consistent and up in the points was good. We always knew Eastern Creek [Sydney Motorsport Park] would be the hardest round for us because it’s a lot of riders’ home track, and I hadn’t been there since 2010. To still come out extending our championship leading by one point, although not much, is good and we’re really happy with that. But Darwin is going to be tight.

The closely-contested Yamaha battle in Supersport this season…

Yeah well it really has turned into an R6 cup this year, I think Yamaha really have produced an amazing bike and that’s why people are choosing it as it shows in the results. I’m mates with all of the guys on the Yamahas, and most of us are part of the YRD program, so we’re often testing with each other at the track. Although we’re rivals on track and really wish to beat each other, off track we can all have a laugh and I really enjoy that relationship we all have. It makes for a good, fun event.

Racing at Hidden Valley…

Darwin’s my favourite track in Australia. I’ve had absolutely great results there on the Superstock 600. We have both lap records – qualifying and race – and we managed to win all three races there last year. I have a good record there and I’ve always gotten along with the spectators really well. I love the atmosphere of the event and am really looking forward to going back there and trying it out with the Supersport guys this year. As the field is so strong I reckon we could push down to the Supersport lap record there.

Sharing the spotlight with Supercross in Darwin…

The event in general for sure as it brings a whole new crowd of people out there. There might be people who come to watch the road racing who haven’t seen Supercross before, or those who come to see Supercross and have never watched a road race. For myself, I’ve never seen a Supercross event, so I’m looking forward to that, but I hope they can get a really good crowd and make a real event out of it.

My primary goal for this season…

The goal for us would definitely be to win the Australian Supersport Championship. We’re sitting on top at the moment, and we’ve got Darwin and Phillip Island in front of us which are tracks I’ve done well at in the past. There’s no reason we can’t keep going up there. We’ve stayed consistent this year and some of our competitors have had problems. I’d love to have the back-to-back titles in Superstock 600 and Supersport – that’s the goal and it’d be absolutely amazing.
