We knew he was something special, but could we ever imagine Marc Marquez would be this good, this fast?

Today we’re looking back at Marquez’ 2012 Moto2 championship, the one that set him up for the step into the plum Repsol Honda seat.

With nine consecutive podiums to round out his 2011 campaign, there was little doubt that the Spaniard would come out firing in 2012.

He opened the year in top form, qualifying second but going on better to claim a win at the GP of Qatar.

In Spain the results were reversed. He was on pole, but beaten narrowly to the win by Pol Espargaro, with 0.241 seconds separating the riders as they crossed the line.

Portugal saw him achieve a perfect score, with pole and then the win, a crash at Le Mans saw his double digit podium record soured.

He notched up third-place finishes at Catalunya and in Great Britain, before registering two wins on the trot in the Netherlands and Germany.

The Italian Grand Prix was the only event he finished and did not score a podium, but he made amends with three wins in a row at Indianapolis, Brno and Misano.

Over the remaining five races he finished on the podium four times, and was able to lock in his world title at Phillip Island prior to the season conclusion.

The rest, as they say, is history. In just over six months we’ve seen the enigmatic MotoGP rookie on the podium on all but one occasion, currently riding an unrivalled four-race win streak on the way to a very possible premier class title.
