MotoGP World Championship points leader Marc Marquez has been hit with a two-point penalty following his involvement in a frightening incident in the British Grand Prix warm-up.

Officials were attempting to retrieve the stricken Monster Tech3 Yamaha of Cal Crutchlow from a gravel trap when Marquez crashed at high-speed in the same location.

His Repsol Honda slid through the gravel trap and made heavy contact with Crutchlow’s bike, with officials leaping aside to avoid being struck.

MotoGP Race Direction officials conducted a hearing into the incident post grand prix, reprimanding Marquez for not adhering to the yellow flags being waved.

“On 1st September, 2013 during MotoGP Warm Up session of the Hertz British Grand Prix, rider Marc Marquez (93) was riding in a section of the circuit where waved yellow flags were displayed due to an earlier accident,” said a statement.

“He continued at racing speed and did not slow down and be prepared to stop as required by the regulations. His subsequent crash at the same point as the previous accident seriously endangered the rider being attended and the marshals in the accident zone.”

Race Direction determined that Marquez would lose two championship points as a consequence of his actions.

No appeal was lodged by Marquez or his team, rendering the decision final.
