Marc Marquez brushed off an early practice crash to set the benchmark performance in qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano.

The Repsol Honda rookie shot to the top of the order in the crucial Q2 session, provisionally quickest from Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo until the dying stages.

Already on P1, Marquez delivered a final blow to his championship rivals, registering a 1m32.915 lap to seal his fifth pole position and shatter Casey Stoner’s standing record.

The flying lap saw Marquez move more than half a second clear of Lorenzo, with his M1-mounted teammate Valentino Rossi securing a front row start in third.

Dani Pedrosa qualified fourth, though clearly frustrated with his relative lack of pace. Monster Tech3’s Cal Crutchlow advanced from Q1 to set the fifth-fastest time, while Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro’s stellar showing continued as he raced to P6.

Stefan Bradl, Alvaro Bautista, Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden completed the top 10.

Australian Bryan Staring qualified his GO&FUN Gresini Honda in 23rd place for the team’s home race.

In the Moto2 ranks, Tuenti HP 40 teammates Pol Espargaro and Esteve Rabat claimed the top two qualifying places respectively, with practice pacesetter Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami a solid third.

Row two will be made up of Thom Luthi, Scott Redding and Xavier Simeon, with row three featuring Johann Zarco, Julian Simon and Marcel Schrotter.

Ant West made inroads to qualify his QMMF Racing Team machine in 19th, while fellow Aussie Jason O’Halloran was a solid 26th fastest in only his second GP qualifying session with JiR Moto2.

German rider, Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger claimed Moto3 pole honours ahead of Estrella Galicia’s Alex Rins and Team Calvo’s Maverick Vinales.

Row two is headed by Zulfahmi Khairuddin from Niccolo Antonelli and Miguel Oliveira, with Eric Granado, Isaac Vinales and Alex Marquez occupying row three.

Aussie Jack Miller qualified his Honda in 11th, with Arthur Sissis slotting his KTM into 18th.
