Sykes secures seventh Superpole of 2013 at Istanbul Park

Current World Superbike Championship points leader Tom Sykes has secured his seventh Superpole victory of the 2013 season at Istanbul Park in Turkey.

The Kawasaki Racing Team rider made the most of of the improved conditions in the afternoon following morning rain, and was first to break into the 1m54s bracket in the race for the top spot.

Championship rival, Aprilia’s Sylvain Guintoli pressured Sykes’ best lap but couldn’t find the margin necessary – 0.022 seconds, to be exact – to steal pole position.

Davide Giugliano made it two Aprilia RSV4s on the front row, qualifying his Red Devils Roma machine an impressive third.

Eugene Laverty heads up row two on the second factory RSV4, with Toni Elias continuing to perform strongly in his WSBK debut, fifth fastest on the other Red Devils machine.

Fixi Crescent Suzuki’s Jules Cluzel was sixth, with BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK’s Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies seventh and eighth respectively.

Leon Haslam qualified his factory Honda in ninth, while Mark Aitchison continued his impressive form on the Pedercini Kawasaki, with the Aussie grabbing 10th place.

Turkish rider Kenan Sofuolgu claimed a home pole position in the Supersport ranks, lapping his Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki around three-tenths quicker than points leader, Yakhnich Motorsport’s Sam Lowes.

MV Agusta rider Christian Iddon was a solid third from Kawasaki’s Florian Marino and Kawasaki’s Kev Coghlan.

Aussie Damian Cudlin will start his first World Supersport race with PTR Honda from 25th position.
