MotoGP World Championship points leader Marc Marquez has topped the post-race teams test session at Misano, setting the benchmark time on his second-last lap of the day.

The Repsol Honda rider turned in a 1m33.264 effort on the 70th of 71 laps, nudging grand prix winner, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo, from the top spot.

Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi was third-fastest, from Monster Tech3’s Cal Crutchlow and GO&FUN Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista.

The test held mixed objectives for teams and riders, who were aiming to refine the current race bikes for the final grands prix of the season while evaluating the prototypes that they will race in 2014.

Repsol Honda ran a plan black livery on its would-be 2014 contender, an evolution of the bike first tested in June. This was the same bike that Casey Stoner had been scheduled to test before rain interrupted plans at Motegi.

Both Marquez and teammate Dani Pedrosa turned laps on the current Honda MotoGP machine, testing a new swingarm and new shock setup.

Marquez’ quick lap was set on the 2014 prototype, a promising sign for Honda in a crucial stage of development.

The factory Yamaha camp focused on a new configuration engine for 2014, while the Tech3 satellite division worked on improving the current bike for Crutchlow and teammate Bradley Smith over the remaining rounds.

The focus at Gresini Honda was testing updates to Showa forks and Nissin brakes, while Stefan Bradl’s LCR team concentrated on mapping and bike geometry.

The primary objective at both factory and satellite Ducati teams was experimenting with braking and other small components, and adjustments for specific upcoming races.

Randy de Puniet and Nob Aoki were on hand once more to put the Suzuki MotoGP prototype through its paces.

De Puniet was 13th quickest in what is the first of three days of testing the team will carry out in Italy, a valuable data gathering exercise as it works towards a return to the sport in 2015.

21 riders took part in the eight-hour test.
