The Australian motorcycle racing community is mourning the loss of a promising young talent after 21-year-old Lachie Thomas died in a car accident yesterday morning.

Thomas, from the New South Wales township of Uralla, lost his life when the ute he was driving left the New England Highway and crashed in a nearby paddock.

The news has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit industry who remember Thomas as a skilled rider and friendly face, with a smile from ear-to-ear.

Thomas was contesting the 2013 Australian FX-Superbike Championship (AFXC) aboard the distinctive yellow Inglis Honda Fireblade.

Australian Road & Track Rider Promotions (ARTRP) managing director Terry O’Neill was one of the many to pay tribute to Thomas via social media.

“Life can be so terribly unfair and this huge loss of one of the nicest friendliest guys I have ever met just proves it,” wrote O’Neill.

“Lachie always smiling always happy, for such a young man he show amazing maturity way beyond his years and Dave can be very proud of the young man he had grown up to be.

“Gloria and my sincere thoughts go out to Dave and Lachie’s younger brother and sisters, Ally, Anna and Daniel. Dave your one of life’s few gentlemen, mate I am so sorry that this has happened.

“If there is anything we can do to help please just let us know… Rest in peace Lachie.”

Thomas placed eighth at last month’s fourth round of the FX-Superbike Championship at Queensland Raceway, and had been running a credible seventh overall in the series.

CycleOnline offers its sincerest condolences to Lachie’s family, friends, fellow riders and the wider industry who are affected by his tragic loss at this time.
