Bryan Staring is hopeful he can show his true potential over 2013’s remaining grands prix.

MotoGP rookie Bryan Staring is adamant his best in the premier class is yet to come after admitting his season had not progressed in the manner he hoped it would.

The Australian talent was snapped up by Fausto Gresini’s Honda squad towards the end of the 2012, with the team identifying him as possessing the necessary skills and personal attributes to lead the development of their CRT machine.

And while he’s certainly held his head high, Staring says he had hoped to have made further inroads with the sole Honda-powered FTR chassis in the field after the 13 grands prix contested.

“So many things new this year, but basically the bike has not been easy for me to adapt to – its been difficult for me to ride,” said Staring.

“I still wouldn’t say I am really so comfortable, even though we started in February, and eight months later, with a lot of racing, it really is a bit disappointing for me for what I expected, we’re arriving in the point of the championship where I’d hoped to be coming on really strong.”

He’s finished in the points on one occasion, but says that isn’t necessarily the focus ahead of a grand prix. He and his crew place higher emphasis on achieving target lap times and coming away from a race with the feeling that positive progress has been made.

“The points are nice but I just want to finish the 25 laps and be able to say I rode my butt off for every lap and did my best – not always easy to do,” he said.

“Catalunya is the only race this year I scored points, and I scored points because the other riders didn’t finish.

“It’s nice to have people happy when you come into the pits but the reality was that was not actually a good race in terms of the target lap time I needed to make, and it was a hard race – a damn hard race.”

With many seats already locked in for 2014, Staring knows now is the time to dig deep and deliver in order to present himself as an attractive prospect after his Gresini squad locked down Scott Redding to race its production machine alongside current rider Alvaro Bautista.

“Absolutely my best is yet to come, because there is no way I’ve showed that yet,” he added. “Of course all the top riders are settling themselves into their positions, I’ll see where I fit in at the end.

“But certainly the best way to get the opportunity is to get the best results, so this is what we’ll try and do.”
