The FIM World Endurance Championship (WEC) will be expanded to feature at least five events in 2014, with discussions in place to secure a potential sixth date on the calendar.

The FIM today released its provisional calendar for the championship, which is again bookended by 24-hour events in France.

The Bol d’Or 24 Hours at Magny-Cours will open proceedings on the weekend of 26-27 April, with an event in the modern heartland of motorcycling racing in Spain set to follow.

The FIM plans to stage a new six-hour event at the Navarra Circuit in Northern Spain in early June. The date will be determined after other world championship calendars and the Spanish CEV schedule is set.

The WEC circus will then travel to Japan for the Suzuka 8 Hours on 27 July, followed by the 8 Hours of Oschersleben in Germany on 16 August.

The final round on the calendar will be the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the Bugatti circuit in France, to be contested on the weekend of 20-21 September.

A sixth event is also in the frame for 2014. There are no indications as to where this could take place as yet, though the FIM’s current expansion plans into Asia and South America could prove a key factor.
