The Laguna Seca circuit in Monterey, California will be absent from the MotoGP schedule but continue on for the second of its three-year deal with the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in 2014.

Circuit officials confirmed the decision to drop the prototype series just a day after a the World Superbike event which produced thrilling racing between production-based bikes.

“For 25 years, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has served as the home for Grand Prix motorcycle racing in the United States, having staged 15 world championship Grands Prix since 1988,” said a Laguna Seca official.

“Unfortunately, and in spite of loyal support from fans, sponsors and media, there will not be a 16th US Grand Prix in 2014.

“At this time, the US is only able to support two MotoGP events. The support provided by the states of Texas and Indiana make it difficult for us, as a not-for-profit, to currently compete.”

The announcement confirms continued speculation of Laguna Seca’s future as Dorna Sports looks to widen the reach of the MotoGP World Championship into Asian and South American countries.

The WSBK circus will revisit Laguna Seca in 2014 and 2015 after staging its first event at the circuit since 2004.

Indianapolis and the Circuit of the Americas will host the two US-based grands prix scheduled for 2014, with dates to be confirmed shortly.
