Caterpillar EPS Yamaha’s Daniel Falzon is taking a cautious approach to the final round of the Australian Supersport Championship at Phillip Island, wary of the form of fellow Yamaha rider Aaron Morris as the title rivals take to the grid for the final two races of the year.

The back and forth battle between Falzon and Morris kicked off at the season opener, also at Phillip Island, with the riders taking a win apiece across two closely-contested races.

While Michael Blair proved the man to beat at the second point-scoring round in Queensland, the focus over the previous rounds has shifted back to the category’s top two.

Falzon’s sweep of the Hidden Valley races, plus the extra point for pole, have swung the advantage in his favour ahead of the finale but he knows his 20-point lead could be gone in a flash should anything go wrong.

“I am feeling reasonably confident going in with a 20-point advantage but I know it wont be easy, an off in either race could see me lose the championship,” said Falzon.

“Phillip Island is a special tack for me, I won my first ever national race there. It is also where I won the opening round of the Supersport championship this year.”

While the class has been closely contested all season, Morris is Falzon’s major threat, with Blair only a minor mathematical shot at the 600cc class crown.

“Aaron (Morris) is the one I have to keep my eye, he won both rounds in Sydney but Phillip Island is pretty much an even playing field for all of us,” added Falzon. “There should be some really close racing over the weekend.”

If he is able to hold onto the points lead, Falzon will lock down a second national title over consecutive years after dominating the Superstock 600 category – now merged with Supersport – in 2012.
