Markus Reiterberger claimed two wins as the German IDM Superbike Championship concluded at the Lausitzring.

Newly-crowned IDM German Superbike Champion Markus Reiterberger rounded out an exemplary 2013 campaign with a pair of race wins at the season finale at the Lausitzring.

Thick fog at the circuit forced delays to the preceding day’s qualifying session, which, when resumed, saw Honda Holzhauer Racing’s Michael Ranseder take pole position by a comfortable half-second margin from Freddy Foray.

But the deciding day belonged to Van Zon Remeha BMW’s Reiterberger, who was able to notch up his fourth win in a row, underlining a dominant second half to his eight-round season.

The opening race saw Wilbers BMW’s Stefan Nebel make the early break, leading from Foray for the first four laps before Reiterberger moved into second.

At mid-race distance the new number one plate holder made a move into the lead, with Nebel losing ground and Aussie Mark Aitchison on the Monster Energy Yamaha climbing as high as second in a spirited scrap for position.

Reiterberger maintained his edge for a 1.960s win from Ranseder, who had steadily fought back over the course of the 16 laps.

Nebel claimed third, with Foray holding on in fourth and Aitchison consolidating in fifth. Aitchison’s teammate Gareth Jones was an early retirement, forced out of the race at one-third distance.

The second race saw Ranseder hold ground at the front of the field for the first six laps before succumbing to the challenge of the in-form Reiterberger.

Jones was in the fight from the start, running a strong second amongst the likes of Foray, Aitchison and Ranseder.

Ranseder maintained second for the majority of the race until a challenge was launched by Aitchison and then Jones, with the Aussies moving into eventual finishing positions of second and third respectively. Fourth went to Foray, with Ranseder hanging on in fifth.

Reiterberger’s maximum haul only served to highlight his dominant season, his 314 points dwarfing his closest challenger Ranseder, who amassed 187.

Regular frontrunner Damian Cudlin was absent from proceedings this weekend, completing grand prix duties in Malaysia for the Paul Bird Motorsports outfit.

Despite his absence, Cudlin held on for third in the title chase, one which was largely disrupted by a series of mechanical misfortunes.

Jones confirmed himself in a strong fourth, with Aitchison advancing to 14th outright after having only contested four of the 18 races.

Team RS Wahr ERC Yamaha’s Kevin Wahr, the new Supersport champion, completed a similar feat to Reiterberger, winning both races of the final showing for the class in 2013.

Wahr won the opener from Kawasaki Schnock Team Shell Advance’s Roman Stamm by a 2.555-second margin, with Luca Grunwald brining his Team Motorrad Bayer Bikerbox Yamaha home for third.

Wahr stretched his advantage to 7.121 seconds in race two, with Stamm again taking second and Yamaha rider Lucas Mahias completing the podium in third.

Team Suzuki Mayer’s Jed Metcher, the sole Australian representative, brought home his GSX-R600 in a pair of seventh place finishes to climb a rung higher in the final championship standing, credited with fourth.
