Support category action has concluded this morning, Phillip Island’s Tissot Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix concluding national level competition at the venue for another season.

Team Suzuki’s Wayne Maxwell capped off his fairytale year by winning the Superbike race and the overall round in a ding-dong battle with Dynotech Maxima BMW’s Glenn Allerton, Team Volvo Group Suzuki’s Robbie Bugden and the Honda duo of Jamie Stauffer and Josh Hook.

“What can I say, massive thanks to Team Suzuki,” said Maxwell. “This weekend has been very tiring in a certain amount of ways. We crashed in qualifying trying to go quick. I was asking for changes for the bike and we were a little bit lost.

“Full credit to the guys at Team Suzuki, the GSX-R1000 was awesome. There were a few tyre dramas this weekend, but Dunlop gave us a great tyre to win on this weekend.”

When Maxwell was asked what it means to win on the biggest stage of the year, he said “no matter what you want to win every weekend. But I guess this one is a little bit special, it’s my home race, and it’s MotoGP, there is no bigger event in the world.”

Dynotech Maxima BMW’s Allerton finished second to Maxwell and second overall for the weekend and by the closing laps it was ‘battle royale’ between the pair. In the end it was another close finish just 0.414 was the difference.

“What an awesome race,” said the 2008 and 2011 ASBK champion. “You could not have scripted it any better. There were five of us being able to race at the front which was good for the fans. Of course I wanted to come out on top, but today was not meant to be.

“I was attacking Wayne all the way, but I had a big slide at the top of Lukey Heights on the last lap trying to catch Wayne. I just gave him a bit too much room on the last corner where he is really strong, so it didn’t quite work out for me.

“But I’m extremely happy with how the weekend went. We’re all in one piece. Big thanks to the Next Gen Motorsports team for all their support and the Pirelli tyres which worked awesome on the BMW HP4.”

Rounding out the top three and third for the weekend was Hook. Bugden and Stauffer were fourth and fifth for the final race and the overall.

Allerton’s team mate Ben Nicolson, who was pioneering his first outing on a Superbike, hit the deck running at turn eleven after tucking the front end on the second last lap.

The Prostock race was taken out by Dustin Goldsmith (Goldys Trailers & Towbars), who finished second overall while Sean Condon (Bikebiz/IPONE/Swann Insurance) finished second, but won the overall round. Third went to Phil Lovett (Cessnock M-cycles/Arai/Motul/RK) and he also got third overall.

Condon also picked up a new Prostock lap record in race three this morning, his 1m34.638 eclipsing Matt Walters’ former benchmark of 1m34.858.

In Supersport it was all about Aiden Wagner (Wagner Soil Testing/XXX Rated Suspension/YRD), who yet again displayed a clean set of heels taking three from three.

“I’m so happy with this victory,” said Wagner. “Three from three, and to win at the MotoGP, it can’t get any better I don’t think.”

The fight was on with Mike Jones (XXX Rated Suspension/RIAA/Allsite Concrete Cutting) snapping at his heels with a ripper finish, just 0.115 the difference. Michael Blair (YRD/Finson/Blairbuild) completed the podium.

Callum Spriggs (Allsite Concrete Cutting/XXX Rated Suspension/YRD) was fourth and Ryan Taylor (SW Racing/YRD/Pirelli/Mupo) was fifth.
