Aprilia is targeting a return to the MotoGP World Championship in 2016, with plans to enter a pure prototype in a factory role.

Piaggio CEO Roberto Colaninno announced the decision at the EICMA show in Italy this week, however details regarding the move remain scarce.

“In 2016, Aprilia will return to MotoGP with the goal of winning and discovering the same success we have enjoyed in World Superbikes,” commented Colaninno.

Former Aprilia Racing boss Gigi Dall’Igna recently switched to Ducati, his position assumed by Romano Albesiano.

Since Dall’Igna’s defection Aprilia’s entry in MotoGP has been unclear, prompting Aspar to switch to Honda’s Production Racer for 2014 with Nicky Hayden spearheading the project.

The Aspar Aprilia relationship has been a strong one over the past two seasons, winning the CRT title with Spaniard Aleix Espargaro both in 2012 and 2013.

Aprilia’s last full season as an official factory MotoGP team was in 2004 with the triple cylinder RS Cube.
