A selection of MotoGP and Moto2 World Championship teams will take part in a special three-day test at Phillip Island on 3-5 March 2014.

Following a controversy-filled Tissot Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix last month, where tyre degradation forced the reduction in laps of the two top categories, Bridgestone and Dunlop will move to improve tyre life at the high-speed 4.445-kilometre circuit.

Confirmation came via the official MotoGP Twitter account on Wednesday, however it’s yet to be confirmed what teams will appear.

“It is confirmed that a group of selected MotoGP and Moto2 riders will test Bridgestone and Dunlop tyres at Phillip Island 3rd-5th March,” the Tweet stated.

Phillip Island was resurfaced in December last year in a $3-million exercise, in which proved popular for riders throughout the 2013 season.

However a lack of direct testing from tyre manufacturers – Bridgestone in MotoGP and Dunlop in Moto2 – ahead of the 2013 grand prix caused havoc during the MotoGP race weekend.

The MotoGP race was split into the first-ever ‘flag-to-flag’ event in dry conditions, reduced to from 27 to 19 laps and forcing riders to pit mid-race between laps nine and 10 – the eventual cause of new world champion Marc Marquez’s disqualification.

Moto2 was also dramatically reduced due to concerns over the Dunlop control tyre wear, slashed from a scheduled 25 laps to just 13.
