Updated: Sykes on top at Jerez on day two of WSBK testing

Newly crowned WSBK Champion Tom Sykes has finished on top on day two of a three-day test aboard his Kawasaki Racing ZX-10R at Jerez, Spain.

Newly-crowned Superbike World Champion Tom Sykes has finished on top during day two of a three-day test aboard his Kawasaki Racing ZX-10R at Jerez, Spain.

Sykes lead the field of 14 Superbike riders – including six of the new EVO-spec machines – with an unofficial best time of 1m40.3sec.

Sykes’ teammate Loris Baz made sure it was a Kawasaki 1-2, finishing half a second down on Sykes with a 1m40.9sec lap time.

Rounding out the top three was recent Aprilia signed Marco Melandri with a lap time of 1m41.2sec.

Reigning BSB champion Alex Lowes rode the Voltcom Cresent Suzuki to a very respectable fourth place with a time of 1m41.2sec as he tries to convince a team in the WSBK paddock to give him a birth for next season.

Jonathan Rea completed the top five for Pata Honda, just under one second down on pace-setter Sykes.

David Salom was the best of the EVO-spec riders, placing in seventh place with a time of 1m42.6 according to reports.

The WSBK winter testing ban comes into force from 1 December until 15 January, 2014 in a bid to reduce the running costs for next year.

Round one of the 2014 season will commence at Phillip Island on 21-23 February.
