Italian former grand prix winner Doriano Romboni has been tragically killed during a Supermoto event held in memory of Marco Simoncelli, who lost his life in the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix.

Romboni won six grands prix during the 1990s across the 125 and 250 categories, before embarking on a 500cc Grand Prix career with Aprilia during the 1996 and 1997 seasons.

Reports indicate that Romboni was struck by another rider after suffering a crash in the second practice session of the Sic Supermoto Day, before being immediately evacuated by helicopter to intensive care.

Despite the best efforts of the staff at the Santa Maria Goretti hospital, Romboni succumbed to his injuries later in the afternoon.

Following the incident, the FIM confirmed it would cancel the remainder of proceedings out of respect to Romboni and his family.
