It was action aplenty in race one of the Phillip Island Championship in both Superbike and the Supersport classes, with Josh Hook and Daniel Falzon emerging victorious.

In the Superbike class it looked as if it was going to be a Honda 1-2-3 as Hook, Jamie Stauffer and Wayne Maxwell all diced for the lead during the 12-lap journey.

Stauffer got the ball rolling and led for the first three laps until his younger teammate Hook drafted past him on the main straight.

Then from lap nine until lap 11 it was Maxwell’s turn to lead, which saw both himself and Hook fight it out until the end.

It all came unstuck for Maxwell when he fell on the last lap at Lukey Heights, leaving Hook to cruise to his first ever victory in the Superbike class aboard the brand new CBR1000RR SP.

“I’m stoked to get this win!” an emotional Hook said. “Huge thanks to Team Honda Racing. They have worked really hard and I have repaid them back with a pole position and a win – I’m really lost for words at the moment.

“Both Wayne and Jamie made it hard and so did lap traffic. The pace slowed up a bit there towards the end. I knew if I could get around Wayne in the last few laps I might be able to break away.

“Coming into Lukey Heights I had a bit of a moment and ran wide, which allowed Wayne to dive up the inside but unfortunately he came off. It’s a shame that Wayne came down because it was a right on battle and he kept me on my toes the whole race.”

Coming home in second was Stauffer, 2.582 seconds behind, with Queenslander Mike Jones (Crazy Dogs Kawasaki/XXX Rated Suspension) picking up his third place on his the Kawasaki ZX-10R.

“I’m so happy to get this third place,” said a joyful Jones. “I would just like to say special thanks to all my sponsors who are on board this year to support me.”

Sean Condon (Bikebiz/IPONE/Swann Insurance Racing) was fourth overall and the first Prostock rider home, with the first Victorian rider Chris Trounson (Gas Honda) picking up fifth.

Falzon (Caterpillar/ESPA/Yamaha) snared the win in Supersport, but was pushed all the way by Callum Spriggs (YRD/Allsite Concrete Cutting Yamaha). In the end Falzon lead him home by 0.845s.

Aaron Morris (Maxima Yamaha) rounded out the top three, with Matt Davies in fourth.
