Team Honda Racing’s Jamie Stauffer has captured the overall victory in the opening round of the Phillip Island Championship this afternoon in a dramatic conclusion to the weekend.

On the opening lap of race two it was once again a Honda freight train led by yesterday’s winner Josh Hook (Team Honda Racing), Staffer and Wayne Maxwell (Motul Honda).

Drama unfolded when Hook highsided at Turn 11, which left Maxwell nowhere to go and saw him run over Hook’s upper-torso. Despite walking away, it was later confirmed Hook sustained a broken collarbone and wrist, while Maxwell dislocated his shoulder – just hours before he is scheduled to fly to Spain this evening.

This drama left Stauffer to roll to victory, beating Crazy Dogs Kawasaki/XXX Rated Suspension Kawasaki’s Mike Jones by 2.802 seconds and he won overall with 45-points on the board.

“For the team it was not very good at all,” said Stauffer. “We have two teammates busted up in the medical centre with pretty good injuries.

“Wayne was to supposed to fly out to Europe tonight, so yeah it’s a bit of a shame. I didn’t actually know what happened until I went down the main straight for the first time I had a look at the big screen.

“It’s unfortunate for the team, it’s unfortunate for Hooky and Wayne… yes I got the win, but you don’t like to see your teammates or fellow racers get hurt, that’s for sure.”

Jones wrapped up second place overall with 38-points points, while rounding out the Superbike podium in third was South Australian rider Adam Christie (Ace Racing/Moto Adelaide) with a 4-3 result.

The Prostock class was taken out by Sean Condon (Bikebiz/IPONE/Swann Insurance Racing Kawasaki), who scored a perfect 50 points by winning both days, from Ben Henry (Cube Racing/Australia Outdoor Living Kawasaki) and Chris Trounson.

The Supersport race was a ripper of a race between Aaron Morris (Maxima Yamaha) and Daniel Falzon (Caterpillar/EPSA/Yamaha).

With two laps to go Falzon was leading until Morris dived up the inside at Turn Four, then Falzon returned the serve by blasting past the New South Welshman down the main straight.

But it was Morris again proving he wanted it more when he passed Falzon again into Turn Four around the outside. Morris eventually won a drag race to the line by 0.011s.

“That was a great race, said Morris “I got a reasonable start, but I was lacking a bit of rear grip due to a lack of testing.

“Considering I turned up this year with no testing and a few of the other boys have done about four days testing it made it a bit harder for me. But I’m wrapped!”

Callum Spriggs was third, 0.886 seconds behind Morris. Matt Davies (Iplex Pipelines/Winslow Constructors/YRD) was fourth with Samuel Lambert (Gold Coast Triumph/Labbon Vacuum Loaders) in fifth.

Overall Falzon won on 45 points, Morris in second on 43, with Spriggs in third on 38. Davies and Lambert rounded out the top five.

The Historics as well turned on the heat with Scott Webster winning overall from Robbie Phillis and Craig Ditchburn.

In the 2014 REEVU Helmets MRRDA Winter Series, taking out the 150cc class was Josh Mercieca from Lachlan Epis and Drew Sells. The 80cc class was taken out by Jacob Whitehouse. Jacob Street was second, with his sister Tayla Street snaring third.
