Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo has ended the first day of testing at Phillip Island on top of the time sheets with a 1m29.213, edging out Ducati’s new boy Cal Crutchlow who recorded a time of 1m29.576.

Lorenzo today was working on the rubber side of the tyres while his teammate, nine times world champion Valentino Rossi was working on the construction side of the tyres. Tomorrow will see the pair swap duties. Lorenzo nailed out a total of 68-laps throughout the course of the day.

Second fastest rider, Crutchlow told CycleOnline.com.au that today was a lot better than in Malaysia.

“It was better than in Malaysia that’s for sure,” he explained. “But it’s a complete different track you know. There are not many very hard breaking points and that is where I was losing out in a lot of the hard breaking.

“The grip level is also a lot better here than what it is in Malaysia. But the Ducati feels good, it feels a lot better than what I expected after the last test. So we can take some positives from that.

“The stuff that Bridgestone gave us today was tough stuff today. Myself and Valentino had the same program today, but I don’t know about Dani [Pedrosa] because he is the only rider here for Honda.”

Rossi was the third fastest rider stopping the clock with a 1m29.730, with the sole Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa in fourth with a time of 1m29.961.

“In the morning I was just doing laps to get in the rhythm,” said Pedrosa. “And in the afternoon I started to do the tyre test which for me today was the compound test. I did go through the steps different compare to the other riders so Bridgestone could get the information they needed.”

Pedrosa did the most amount of laps in the MotoGP class when he did a total of 88 laps. Rounding out the top five and the last MotoGP rider was Andrea Dovizioso who was 0.752 seconds slower than Lorenzo.

In the Moto2 class it was Tito Rabat, who set the fastest time on his Marc VDS Racing Team machine posting a time of 1m32.316, from his teammate Mika Kallio who did fling his bike away at Siberia in the late afternoon which brought out a red flag. Kallio posted a time of 1m33.440. 26-year old Jordi Torres (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2) rounded out the whole field who did a 1m34 flat.
