Hard-fought Friday qualifying sessions commence 2014 season.
Team InsureMyRide Racing’s Glenn Scott claimed a surprise pole position in this afternoon’s lone YMF Loan Australian FX-Superbike Championship qualifying session at Wakefield Park.
In his debut aboard the limited edition Honda CBR1000RR SP, Scott posted a 58.922s in the second of a two-part split qualifying format, which will decide the grid for Saturday’s AFX-SBK action.
Times posted across the trio of races tomorrow will go toward determining the starting line-up for Sunday’s all-important opening round of the Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship.
Scott headed fellow privateer standout Sean Condon on the BikeBiz Racing Kawasaki, just 0.060s in arrears. The duo were the lone riders to break the 59s barrier on Friday, putting in admirable performances to upstage the factory might.
Early pace-setter Glenn Allerton (Next Gen Motorsports BMW) was third at 59.149s, yet unable to match his blistering pre-season test times, while current Australian Superbike Champion Wayne Maxwell (Motul Honda) was fourth with a 59.183s.
Top factory Yamaha was Superbike rookie Cru Halliday, who bounced back from a heavy free practice fall to claim fifth with a 59.201s lap. The top 10 was completed by Jamie Stauffer (Team Honda Racing), Rick Olson (YRT with YMI), teammate Robbie Bugden, Chris Seaton (Trinder Aprilia Racing) and Dustin Goldsmith (Goldy’s Trailers & Towbars Kawasaki).
Current number one plate holder Matt Walters (Kawasaki Connection) was 11th, narrowly ahead of another rookie in Mike Jones (Crazy Dogs Kawasaki) and returning hometown hero Troy Herfoss, who’s filling in for Josh Hook at Team Honda Racing.
Goldsmith, Olson and Walters were also big names to experience crashes during Friday’s proceedings across the three practice sessions and qualifiers.
In a scintillating opening day of the season, the top 16 Superbikes were separated by less than a second, setting up a tight weekend of premier class competition. Multiple-time Formula Xtreme champion Kevin Curtain was 21st at the conclusion of qualifying.
In the Supersport division it was Aaron Morris (Yamaha) who secured pole with a 1m00.811, the lone rider under 1m01s. Fellow R6 riders Callum Spriggs, Aiden Wagner and Australian champion Daniel Falzon rounded out the front row.
Former World Supersport regular Matt Davies made it five Yamahas in the top five, while Tapout Energy Wet4U Racing Kawasaki’s Aaron Gobert was sixth despite missing the opening three practice sessions.
The first sessions of the Kawasaki Insurances FX 300 Ninja Cup took place, with Brandon Demmery (Noise Guard Racing) almost three tenths faster than Kyle Buckley (BC Performance A1 Kawasaki). Other riders on top today included Jed Metcher (Formula Oz), Craig McMartin (Pro-Twins) and Angus Reekie (Nakedbikes).
