Jack Miller officially cemented himself as Australia’s next MotoGP hope after scoring his first career Moto3 World Championship race victory to open the season in Qatar.

The 19-year-old’s triumph was the first in grand prix racing’s smallest category since Casey Stoner won his final 125cc GP for Red Bull KTM in Malaysia, 2004.

It was a sensational debut for the Townsville native at Red Bull KTM Ajo, snatching the lead in the penultimate sector and going on to win after a race-long dual with Alex Marquez.

“Without a doubt, I could not have ask for anything better from today,” Miller commented. “My first race with the team, my first podium and my first win – unbelievable. It was a very good race and a great way to start the season.

“There are still many grands prix ahead and we have much to learn, but for today I am very happy. Winning a race is an amazing feeling, so I hope I can repeat the feeling more times. Thanks to the whole team for the work we’ve done together so far.”

Miller now leads the world championship for the first time in his third full season, entering the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, in three weeks.
