Marc Marquez has rounded out the first ever day of official MotoGP free practice at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in Argentina the convincing quickest on track.

The Repsol Honda rider used the morning session as a familiarisation mission, registering just the 14th fastest lap.

He would rebound in the afternoon to produce a blistering 1m39.313 lap, 1.083 seconds clear of teammate Dani Pedrosa who ran second.

Aleix Esparagaro slotted his Open class Forward Yamaha into third, just 0.170s off Pedrosa, with Stefan Bradl, one of a select group of riders to have tested at the circuit beforehand, in fourth.

The lap time spread was vast, with Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Ross and Jorge Lorenzo languishing over two seconds off the pace in eighth and ninth, beaten by both of the Monster Tech3 Yamaha teammates, Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro.

Broc Parkes made an impressive start to his weekend and maiden campaign at the Argentine track, rounding out the second session in 17th aboard his Paul Bird Motorsport machine.

Parkes outpaced the likes of Michele Pirro and Scott Redding, along with British teammate Michael Laverty.

French rider, AirAsia Caterham’s Johann Zarco capped off the first day of Moto2 track running with the fastest time in the intermediate class, just 0.027 seconds ahead of AGR Team’s Jonas Folger.

Dominique Aegerter was third-fastest, with Takaaki Nakagami fourth and Maverick Vinales impressing again in fifth.

Aussie Ant West showed promise after free practice two, setting the 14th fastest lap aboard his QMMF Racing Team bike in a super-competitive field that saw the top 20 separated by less than a second.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Jack Miller looks set the capitalise on the momentum of back-to-back grand prix wins in the Moto3 class after dominating proceedings on day one.

The Australian rider was able to finish 0.733 seconds ahead of SaxoPrint-RTG’s Efren Vaquez in the first practice session, and held station ahead of the Spanish rider after the second session, 0.263 seconds ahead.

Isaac Vinales was third for Team Calvo, with Estrella Galicia’s Alex Marquez fourth and Miller’s teammate Karel Hanika completing the top five.

Arthur Sissis completed his first outing at the circuit with a solid 25th place effort for Mahindra Racing. After a disastrous start, the Australian is eager to turn around his form in South America.
