Australian teenager Olly Simpson finished 10th in both Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup races at Jerez in Spain over the weekend.

Simpson, who is entering his second year in the grand prix development category, qualified a promising seventh ahead of the two 16-lap races and then forged his way to 10th in the races for a consistent opening bout.

With his results, Simpson now leaves Jerez’s season-opening round 11th in the world championship standings on 12 points.

Japanese rider Soushi Mihara, 14, won Saturday’s opening race of the season before 16-year-old Spanish series leader Joan Mir showed perfect skill and timing to take race two at Jerez.

The 2014 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup will resume at Mugello in Italy on 29-31 May.
