Rookie Cameron Beaubier won the second round of the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Shootout presented by Yamaha at Sonoma Raceway in California on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Monster Energy Graves Yamaha rider dominated the 20-lap race by 9.803 seconds to defeat teammate Josh Hayes, while round one winner Martin Cardenas (Yoshimura Suzuki) completed the podium.

“I started on the pole, which is on the inside here at Sonoma Raceway, so I kind of got pinched off in the first turn, which shuffled me back to fifth,” Beaubier said. “This track is very technical and I’m glad I’ve upped my training this year because it’s helped me handle the big R1.

“I was able to work myself back up to Josh, who was in the lead, and it wasn’t easy to get around him. It’s great to get this win on my home track and in front of my family and friends.”

After qualifying second, Australian David Anthony improved upon his round one results with fourth at Sonoma aboard his privateer Suzuki after coming under attack from Cardenas early on.

Beaubier now leads the series by four points from Cardenas, with Hayes third. Anthony is tied with Roger Hayden (Yoshimura Suzuki) for fourth after the latter was fifth on Sunday.

In the Pro Sportbike race Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Garrett Gerloff edged out Bobby Fong (Triumph) for the victory, with Bryce Prince (Yamaha) completing the podium.
