South Australian Billy McConnell is the new Motorpoint British Supersport Championship leader following a sterling double race victory at Oulton Park.

McConnell won Sunday’s Sprint race and Monday’s Feature after an entertaining battle in the Supersport ranks to take charge of the series lead aboard the factory-supported Triumph Daytona 675R.

“When you are battling bar to bar like that it is pretty special to take the victory,” McConnell said. “Alastair [Seely] is a clean racer and always comes in with smiles even when you have beaten him.

“I had an awesome package thanks to the team and these are the result that we wanted.”

McConnell said it was a team effort following an off-season that included racing at Phillip Island as a wildcard in the World Supersport season opener.

“What can I say, it’s been a great weekend for myself and Smiths Triumph and a big thanks to the team, especially my crew chief Jason Jones and John Trigger,” he added.

“Together with the guys at K-Tech Suspension and Tim Seed working his magic with the electronics, I’ve got a great package beneath me and everything’s working really well. The speed of the motor has come on in leaps and bounds and the hard work everyone is putting in is paying dividends.

“I was unaware Alastair [Seely] and Graeme [Gowland] had crashed in Sunday’s race so kept chipping away and was then able to ease off in the closing stages whilst the second was tough all the way to the end.

“We come for race wins so to have taken them both is superb. We’re all pulling together and I’ve got a great feeling with the bike so a big thanks to the whole team for their effort and commitment.”

McConnell now has a 13-point lead in the series following the opening two rounds of the season.
