A selection of quality supporting acts took part alongside the Superbike and Supersport categories as national level road racing returned to Mallala in South Australia with round two of the 2014 YMF-Loan FX-Superbike Championship.

Victorian’s Ben Nicolson (Dynotech Pirelli BMW) delivered a stunning 1m08.240 to pinch pole position in Formula Oz, beating fellow Victorian Chris Trounson on his Unichip Gas Honda CBR1000RR who posted a 1m08.479.

“It feels really good to finally get my first pole position on a national level” said Nicolson. “It’s good to be at the front of the field for a start. Hopefully we can do well in the racers and bring home some wins this weekend.”

Rounding out the front row was Brayden Carr (Carr Bros Motorsports) and Phil Lovett (Cessnock Motorcycles/Harley Davidson).

Heading up the second row of the grid will be Glenn Scott on the InsureMyRide Honda CBR1000RR with Matthew Harding (K&R Hydraulics/Kawasaki Connection), local boy Liam Wilkinson (Protectaprint) and Irishman Paul Byrne (LTR Honda Racing/Inglis Plumbing/999 Group).

In the FX 300 Ninja Cup class, young gun Kyle Buckley (BC Performance A1 Kawasaki) claimed pole. It was not all smooth sailing for Buckley, who did tuck the front-end at the last corner during qualifying but still managed to post a 1m20.237.

Buckley was the pace-setter in all sessions bar the first practice session which saw Queenslander Andy Lawson (Team Moto Motorcycles) on top. Lawson will line up alongside Buckley with Kiwi rider Bailee Perriton (Fujitsu/ESPC Services).

“It was a pretty good session,” said Buckley after qualifying. “We just went out and tried to find a bit of space, and went pretty hard. I managed to do two fast laps and got down to the low 20s. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.”

Rounding out the front row will be Brandon Demmery (Noiseguard Racing). Demmery was 2.265sec behind Buckley, but that was due because of during the practice sessions his footpegs where coming loose and he lost vital track time.

The first FX 250 Ninja Cup rider home was Grant Jordan (Jordan Bros Racing/Reliance Motorsport/Aberdeen).

Angus Reekie (KTM Racing/Motorex/SBS/Bell Helmets) will start from P1 in the NakedBike class on his KTM 1200 Super Duke R. Reekie laid down a 1m10.612 to beat Lovett on his KTM.

James Arnold was the fastest Pro-Twin (P1) rider on his Italian Motorcycle/Butch Bennett Crash Repairs Ducati Panigale, edging out Michael McMillan (McMillan Criminal Law) riding an Aprilia RSV4 with current champion Simon Galloway (Cessnock Motorcycles/Bendix/DNA) in third. Mick Johnston (North Coast V Twins/Hogs Breath Café) was the fastest P2 rider saddling a Ducati 848.
