Swann Series leader still recovering from broken collarbone.
Team Motul Honda’s Wayne Maxwell is on target to line up at Wakefield Park’s penultimate round of the 2014 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship next weekend, but admits he’s in a race against the clock to reach race fitness.
The 2013 Australian Superbike Champion broke his right collarbone in a motocross training incident last month and underwent surgery to insert a plate and eight screws into the injury.
“I’m starting to get strength back in my collarbone, but haven’t been able to do any gym work or anything like that yet,” Maxwell said. “I’ve just been doing a bit of Theraband work to build up the stability and go from there. It’s important to have the range of motion so I can move around on the bike okay.”
“It’s definitely a race against time, but it is what it is. You just have to be a realist about it. I’ve had one of those years where I’ve been injured a fair bit, but I will do what I can do at Wakefield Park and be in a position to win at the final round.”
Entering Wakefield Park next weekend Maxwell currently holds a 14-point advantage over teammate Jamie Stauffer, who is also on the road to recovery after breaking his ankle at Suzuka in July.
Maxwell has also confirmed that a scheduled attendance at Le Mans’ final round of the 2014 Endurance World Championship with the Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) is unlikely to go ahead on 20 September in France.
