Marc Marquez reestablished his dominance at the Circuit of The Americas as he set the quickest time in FP2.

It was all change for FP2, with the track drying and the rain holding off it gave riders a chance to head out and attempt to set what could be their fastest lap of the two days of practice.

The time’s from FP2 might be very important, as with more rain forecast for tomorrow they could decide who makes it through to the second qualifying session on Saturday.

Riders initially headed out on wet tyres to get a feel for the track conditions, but came back in to switch to slicks as the racing line began to dry with about 20 minutes to go.

This led to a frantic end to proceedings as riders attempted to take advantage of what could be the only dry session of the weekend.

Repsol Honda’s Marquez was the only rider to break the 2m05s barrier, as he set a 2m04.835s to finish three-tenths ahead of the CWM LCR Honda of Cal Crutchlow (+0.327s) who is benefitting from a chassis and seat upgrade to his RC213V in Austin, and was the fastest of the satellite riders.

Completing the provisional front row was the Ducati Team GP15 of Andrea Iannone (+0.355s). Seven-tenths back from Marquez was Aleix Espargaro on the Team Suzuki Ecstar GSX-RR in fourth, with Andrea Dovizioso in fifth on the second Factory Ducati.

Valentino Rossi, the man who rolled back the years to claim the race win in Qatar, ended the day in sixth on the leading Yamaha.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith crashed out during the session but was unhurt, while Athina Forward Racing’s Stefan Bradl (+1.155s) was the leading Open class rider in eighth place.

The Pramac Racing Ducati of Yonny Hernandez (+1.257s) finished in ninth, with Bradley Smith (+1.299s) claiming what could be the last Q2 automatic qualifying spot in 10th, after crashing out of the session unhurt.

It was a positive day for Australian Jack Miller (CWM LCR Honda), 13th in the opening wet practice session and 19th in FP2, 3.081s off Marquez but quickest of the Open-spec Hondas.

British rider Sam Lowes set the fastest time of the day during a dry Moto2 FP2 despite a huge highside towards the end of the session.

Speed Up Racing’s Lowes was leading the timesheets with only a few minutes to go when he had a horrific highside, adding to his crash earlier this morning, and although the rider managed to walk away from the incident it looks as though he will be battered and bruised for the rest of the weekend.

Lowes finished with a 2m10.563s, ahead of Ajo Motorsports Johann Zarco (+0.096s) and the reigning Moto2 champion Tito Rabat on the Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex (+0.375s) who also crashed out towards the end of the session, escaping unhurt.

Queensland’s Anthony West (+0.498s) on the QMMF Racing Team Speed Up bike finished in fourth, in front of Athina Forward Racing’s Simone Corsi (+0.838s) and his teammate Julian Simon (+0.905s) in sixth.

SAXOPRINT RTG’s Alexis Masbou waited until the end of FP2 to set the fastest Moto3 time of the day, displaying his pace towards the end of FP2 to set a 2m29.267s to end the first day of practice on top of the timesheets.

Andrea Locatelli (+0.038s) on the Gresini Racing Moto3 Honda improved by one position from FP1 to finish in second, ahead of Leopard Racing’s Danny Kent (+0.576s).

Kent’s teammate Efren Vazquez (+0.806s) was in fourth, with the fastest man from FP1 Niccolo Antonelli (+0.841s) having to settle for fifth on the Ongetta-Rivacold Honda. Jorge Martin (+ 1.112s) was the leading Mahindra rider in sixth.

Remy Gardner battled through a frustrating day one. In the first session, held in heavy rain, a bad vibration developed on the out lap, forcing Gardner to pit immediately.

The team made some changes and checked the bike over, however, the problem was not resolved. Remy missed the remainder of the session, only completing around eight laps.

In Free Practice 2 the vibration presented yet again, with Gardner pitting after a few laps. Eventually a tyre change solved the problem and Gardner was able to complete some laps without any machine problems on his way to 29th.
