Inaugural Moto2 World Champion Toni Elias has been earmarked for the AB Motoracing Honda team in place of the injured Karel Abraham in the Indianapolis MotoGP round next weekend.

The Spaniard, who has one MotoGP victory to his credit at Estoril in 2006, will make his first premier class appearance since 2012 when he was a guest Pramac Ducati during the mid-season.

After spending time back in Moto2 during 2013 and finishing ninth in WorldSBK with Red Devils Aprilia during 2014, Elias’ 2015 plans to ride with the JR Racing BMW team fell through after the team folded prior to the season-opener.

The 32-year-old made a surprise appearance at last weekend’s Suzuka 8 Hours in Japan, partnering Ratthapark Wilairot and Tatsuya Yamaguchi at TOHO Racing with Moriwaki Honda for 14th. The team was in podium contention before encountering mechanical troubles.
