Countdown: FX-ASC series favourites

Our top four Australasian Superbike title candidates.

Four of seven Australasian Superbike Championship (FX-ASC) rounds are in the books for 2015, and with just three rounds remaining in the series, there are four riders who’ve established themselves as the clear title favouries. And as a result, the following four have won a round each to date this year entering round five at Wakefield Park on 25-27 September.

4. Cru Halliday:
The speed of Halliday has been undeniable this year as the only returning rider at Yamaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YRT with YMI), breaking through for his first overall at Sydney’s third round. He’s quickly got to grips with the 2015 YZF-R1M, but arm-pump at Mallala and a costly crash in race three at Queensland have bumped him down the order in the standings – now 35 points out of the lead. The title’s not out of the question, but race wins are high on the agenda and mistakes have to be minimised.

3. Glenn Allerton:
The triple Australian Superbike Champion (ASBK) would love nothing more than to add the FX-ASC crown and, judging by his form at Queensland Raceway, that target’s well within reach. Allerton’s 20 points off Herfoss after a relatively slow start to the season while gelling with YRT and the R1M, but he has shown in the past that once he gets on a roll he’s as capable as anybody. It’s important to note, Allerton hasn’t been on the podium at either of the two Sydney rounds so far, which he will have to improve upon if the title goes down to the wire at round seven.

2. Wayne Maxwell:
The reigning Australasian Superbike Champion was always going to be strong on board the YRT with YMI YZF-R1M and he’s now clawed his way to within three points of Herfoss. Maxwell’s lone overall win of the year so far came at Mallala, but there’s a good chance he will gain more from here (he won at Wakefield at Winton last year), which will position him well for a run at the championship. If he does manage to do so, that will mark three consecutive years that he’s won Superbike titles up against the nation’s elite.

1. Troy Herfoss:
We named Team Honda Racing’s Herfoss as the title favourite in the pre-season and, so far, so good. The 28-year-old won the opening round in Sydney and has landed on the podium across all rounds contested this season, which will see him carry the series lead into his home round at Wakefield Park. As Yamaha’s riders pile on the pressure, Herfoss needs to really take advantage of Wakefield and Winton – two circuits that should be most suited to his CBR1000RR SP – if he’s to bring home the title at Sydney Motorsport Park in December.
