Yamaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance’s reigning Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Champion Wayne Maxwell has tied longtime title leader Troy Herfoss (Team Honda Racing) following a stunning clean-sweep at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria today.

A pivotal point in the championship came in race one at Winton this morning, as YRT with YMI’s Maxwell won by 2.358s in a commanding performance over the 12-lap duration.

Maxwell passed early leader and title rival and ex-teammate Herfoss just prior to the midway point, quickly clearing off into the distance for a controlled and important opening victory of today.

It was what was going on behind Maxwell that proved the main talking point however, with second factory Yamaha Glenn Allerton also moving past Herfoss, before a mistake while attempting a counter-attack dropped the series leader further back on lap eight, behind both Cru Halliday (YRT with YMI) and Mike Jones (Australian Outdoor Living – Cube Racing Team).

Fifth was where Herfoss crossed the finish, his advantage over Maxwell in the title chase reduced to seven points from 16. The top 10 was completed by Jamie Stauffer (Team Honda Racing), Matthew Walters (Kawasaki Connection), Linden Magee (LMR Honda), Ben Burke (SA Kawasaki BCperformance) and his teammate Evan Byles.

Another thrilling Superbike race entertained onlookers in rural Victoria when the premier class hit the circuit for the second time on Sunday, with Herfoss leading the opening stages, before Maxwell worked his way to the front on lap nine.

A minor mistake by Maxwell allowed Herfoss to take over at the front once more with a dive under brakes, but he too made an error by running wide to allow Maxwell back through almost immediately on his way to a 0.811s victory.

Second for Herfoss now sees the pair separated by four points in the series with just one race remaining today. A racy Allerton wound up third after he too featured in the mix for victory, while Stauffer crossed the line a lonely fourth.

A crash out of position four from Jones enabled Ben Burke to finish as top Pro-Am in fifth, with the field completed by Halliday – who suffered from a disastrous start – ahead of Walters and Byles. Magee was another casualty on lap four of the race.

Maxwell completed the clean-sweep across all six races of the FX-ASC weekend in race three this afternoon, remaining composed for a 0.610s win despite coming under immense pressure from Herfoss in a heated duel – the pair going back and forth for the lead in the race’s opening to mid-stages.

The result means Herfoss enters Sydney Motorsport Park’s final round tied with defending number one plate holder Maxwell once his Winton pole position point is factored in. Third for the final race, but second overall, was Allerton, who himself is now 24 points outside of the series lead with the one round remaining.

Fourth across the finish line in race three was top Pro-Am Jones, getting the better of Stauffer, while Halliday again had to work his way through the pack to sixth. It was a tight battle between Walters and Burke for seventh – crossing the line in that order – with Magee and Byles taking the final top 10 placings.

In a repeat of yesterday’s first Supersport affair, Yamaha-mounted Michael Blair took the opening victory by 1.021s this afternoon over initial pace-setter Callum Spriggs (Yamaha), who’s now just two points outside of points leader Brayden Elliott (Suzuki) in the title chase.

Third was another strong showing of Kyle Buckley (Kawasaki), directly trailing Spriggs, with Elliott in-turn closely crossing the finish line behind him for fourth position. In fifth place was Brad Swallow (Kawasaki) and sixth Paul Young (Kawasaki), while Luke Mitchell (Yamaha), Troy Guenther (Kawasaki), the returning Justin Di Giandomenico (Yamaha) and Cambridge Olivier (Yamaha) filled the top 10 results.

The second nine-lap Supersport race saw a new championship leader emerge in the late stages of the season, as second place now has Spriggs two points ahead of Elliott in the race for the title. Elliott led the early laps after a strong start before Spriggs took charge, however it was Blair who eventually made his way to the front for a hard-fought 0.339s victory.

Spriggs challenged all the way to the end for the runner-up over Buckley, while Elliott eventually took the chequered flag in fourth 2.043s off the win. Fifth for race two was Guenther, ahead of Swallow, Olivier, Mitchell, Young and Di Giandomenico rounding out the top 10 finishers.

New national Supersport champion Elliott showed why he’s so highly rated after a breakout year in Winton’s final race of the weekend, putting forward a determined effort to win by 0.558s and regain the title lead from Spriggs.

Elliott was out front early and looked comfortable in position, before Spriggs made his move to the front on lap seven of the nine. But Elliott was up for the fight, quickly countering back into the top spot and he went on to take his lone race win of the round.

Third in the final race was Blair, which was enough to claim the overall round victory over Spriggs and Elliott. Close behind Blair on track in the final outing was the in-form Buckley, as the top five was filled by a consistent Guenther. The top 10 was rounded out by Swallow, Olivier, Young, Mitchell and Di Giandomenico.

Remaining round winnners today in the host of support categories included Paul Young (FX300 Ninja Cup), Paul Byrne (Formula Oz), Beau Beaton (Pro-Twins), Adrian Pierpoint (Nakedbike) and Jason Martin (Formula Xtreme).
