The final round of the 2015 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship is here, as Troy Herfoss (Team Honda Racing) and Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance) go head-to-head for the title.

Entering the weekend the pair were tied, however by virtue of Herfoss’ win yesterday, he will start from pole position today and earnt an additional (vital) point for that feat.

It was uncharacteristic to see Maxwell crash out at turn nine so early yesterday, which sets up an intriguing run at the title today. While Herfoss starts from P1, Maxwell’s out of P8, although it shouldn’t make a major difference at this particular track.

If either Herfoss or Maxwell slip today, shadowing them will be Maxwell’s teammate Glenn Allerton, who still has a mathematical chance 25 points in arrears of Herfoss.

This championship would be huge for any of them. Another title (he won the regular Saturday FX-Superbike crown yesterday) for Herfoss will establish him as the best in the business for 2015, in extremely good company with the likes of his rivals.

As for Maxwell, after winning the ASBK title with Suzuki in 2013, a double FX-ASC title win with Team Honda Racing last year showed just how versatile and competitive he is. A third title-winning season in a row, this time at Yamaha, would cement him as one of the country’s all-time greats.

Allerton meanwhile has steadily gained momentum on the YZF-R1M this year. He already has three ASBK titles to his credit, but a victory this year in an extremely tough environment – and on the same equipment as Maxwell – would go down as one of his sweetest victories.

There are various other riders who have what it takes to get in the mix and upset the title contenders, including third of the Yamahas Cru Halliday (who set pole on Friday), Herfoss’ teammate Jamie Stauffer, Cube Racing’s Mike Jones and the likes of Matt Walters on his Kawasaki Connection ZX-10R.

The temperature’s increased today, however as this weekend’s unique twilight format extends into the evening (almost to 8:00pm), we’re expecting a mixture of conditions across the day. Tyre wear and usage of the control rubber will be critical.

This weekend’s format is completely new to everybody, being across the two days, and it’s largely dictated by the addition of live television tonight on Fox Sports channel 501 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm local time.

It’s going to be a great way to wrap up what’s been an entertaining season, not only within the premier Superbike ranks, but also Supersport and into the various supporting categories. This is one of the biggest events of the year.

So if you’re within driving distance of Sydney Motorsport Park then come on out, otherwise the Livestream is viewable on CycleOnline.com.au all day today, along with the television coverage later on.
