Herfoss crowned Australasian Superbike Champion

Team Honda Racing rider captures title by a single point.

The 2015 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship title winners have been crowned, in a frantic final round at Sydney Motorsport Park this evening.

Team Honda Racing’s Troy Herfoss is the 2015 champion following a frantic final race of the season, defeating defending champion Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance) by a single point.

The opening race of the Superbikes went to Team Honda Racing’s Jamie Stauffer after a hard-fought 12 laps, winning by 0.231s over a determined Mike Jones (Australian Outdoor Living – Cube Racing Kawasaki) – the pair trading places on numerous occasions in the battle for the win.

A late pass by Stauffer sealed him the race victory, fending off the power of Jones’ ZX-10R on the run to the line in a terrific start to the round.

Third was a pivotal result for title leader Herfoss despite a shaky opening laps, extending his lead to three points in the process, as Maxwell crossed the line fourth, but over two seconds in arrears of Stauffer in hot, slick conditions.

Cru Halliday (YRT with YMI) let teammate Maxwell by mid-race and trailed him home for fifth, as Glenn Allerton (YRT with YMI), Matthew Walters (Kawasaki Connection), Will Davidson (Yamaha), Evan Byles (SA Kawasaki BCperformance) and Ben Burke (SA Kawasaki BCperformance) – who pitted early on – completed the race order.

A thrilling second Superbike race saw Jones take full advantage of a new tyre fitted to take a 2.515s victory over Herfoss, with Maxwell crossing the line directly behind in third.

The race started with Jones and Herfoss comfortably out front, however in the middle stages Herfoss made a mistake at turn one, running wide with a false neutral and dropping back into the clutches of arch-rival Maxwell.

From there Jones was never header across the remainder of the 12 laps, while Herfoss got the better of an aggressive battle with Maxwell on the final lap, as Allerton and Stauffer completed the top five.

Sixth was Walters after he was racy in the opening laps, leading home Burke, Halliday, Davidson and Byles for the top 10.

Herfoss won the title by a solitary point over defending champion Maxwell in a nerve-wracking end to the season during race three.

The race and round was won by Jones by 0.108s after an entertaining battle with Stauffer, however third for a fighting Maxwell wasn’t enough as Herfoss trailed him across the line for fifth.

Between them on track was Halliday in fourth, while Allerton crossed the line sixth. Burke, Walters, Byles and Davidson completed the field.

The Supersport championship went to Yamaha-mounted Callum Spriggs, the Queenslander overcoming Brayden Elliott (Suzuki) for the crown on countback following a tie-breaker.

A thrilling three-way scrap for the opening eight-lap Supersport race win of the morning eventually went to Michael Blair (Yamaha) 0.305s over Elliott, with Spriggs 0.361s off the victory in third.

The trio were in a class of their own throughout the duration as they get set to fight for the title today, trading places on multiple occasions before Blair was able to take home the win.

Behind them Kyle Buckley (Kawasaki) was fourth from Brad Swallow (Kawasaki), while Ben Blyth (Kawasaki), Troy Guenther (Kawasaki), Mitch Levy (Yamaha), Luke Mitchell (Yamaha) and Giuseppe Scarcella (Honda) completed the top 10.

Suzuki-mounted Elliott claimed what was one of his most important wins of the season in race two this afternoon, crossing the second eight-lap leg 2.273s ahead of race one winner Blair after an aggressive early scrap, with Guenther bouncing back for third this time out.

But it was the fourth place result of Spriggs that enabled Elliott to close to within two points in the title chase with just one race remaining.

Buckley was fifth directly behind Spriggs, while Mitchell, Levy, Swallow, Blyth and Cambridge Olivier slotted into positions six through 10.

The final Supersport race of the 2015 championship resulted in a tie between Spriggs and Elliott for the 2015 title, with Spriggs awarded the crown on countback with five wins to Elliott’s four.

It started with Guenther sitting strong at the front, with Elliott tucked right onto his rear wheel in the opening laps and that’s the way it stayed – the pair finishing 1-2.

Things weren’t so smooth for Spriggs, but he clawed his way forward and eventually finished the race in third, which ultimately was enough to claim the title.

Blair was fourth quickest ahead of Levy in fifth, while Buckley, Mitchell, Swallow, Blyth and Olivier filled the top 10.

In the ever-popular Kawasaki Insurances FX300 Ninja Cup class it was Ben White who won the round, Paul Young the champion, following an action-packed season of competition.

Ducati mainstay Craig McMartin topped the Formula Oz in a series won by Paul Byrne, as Darren Jones beat eventual champion Beau Beaton for the Pro-Twins/Nakedbike overall today.

The Formula Xtreme ranks were taken out by Lucas Vitale tonight, but runner-up Brendan McIntyre did enough to secure the championship victory.
