YRT supported rider Callum Spriggs (YRD/Allsite Concrete Cutting) claimed his very first road racing championship, in what was a nail biting finish right to the very end in the YRD Supersport championship at Sydney Motorsport Park yesterday.

Spriggs, who hails from Caboolture in Queensland, went into the final round with an eleven point advantage, but had his title lead slashed to just two points with one race remaining after finishing third in race one and fourth in race two.

The equation was for Spriggs to either beat his rival Brayden Elliott or at least finish directly behind him to win the championship. In a tension filled final race, Spriggs locked onto the rear wheel of Elliot and shadowed him the entire race. The pair crossed the finish line with Elliott in second and Spriggs third, meaning the championship points were tied on 373 points. However, as Spriggs snared five wins throughout the 2015 Australasian Superbike Championship compared to his rival’s four, Spriggs was awarded the crown on countback.

“It’s been awesome year,” said Spriggs, who finished fourth for the round. “At the start of the year I had that DNF which really put me back. It didn’t help as well going into the second round at Mallala a little bit injured after I crashed while testing Malaysia as well.

“All the hard work this year has finally paid off and I’m just so happy right now,” beamed Spriggs after race three.

Finishing in second place for the round was Michael Blair on the Finson Yamaha YZF-R6. The 21-year-old got the ball rolling when he took out race one by .305 seconds before finishing with a second and fourth place in the remaining two races.

In the final race, Blair was really struggling with grip and had a few moments during the course of the race, so decided to settle for eighteen championship points. Blair openly admitted that he had a few tyre grip and setup issues over the weekend.

“It’s nice to finish on a high,” said Blair. “We had a few ups and downs during the course of the year. We can leave Sydney Motorsport Park with our heads high and go into the off-season and train real hard, then back firing for 2016.”

Blair took out third place overall in the ASC championship with 345-points on the board. The best placed YRD supported rider was Mitch Levy (Warm & Safe Australia/YRD/ATR), who finished in sixth place, while fellow YRD rider, Luke Mitchell (JNL Racing) was eighth.

Finishing with a solid third place in the Formula Oz class was Simon Galloway on the Yamaha YZF-R1. Galloway had enough points to claim third place in the overall standings. The New South Welshman finished three points ahead of South Australian Liam Wilkinson (Protectaprint), who was racing for the second time aboard his R1 in the ASC series.
