Road sales on the rise during first half of 2016

Australian road bike sales have increased by 4.4 percent in the first half of 2016, accounting for near half of the new motorcycle market with a 43.4 percent share across the opening six months of the year.

Harley-Davidson was again the top seller in the road motorcycle market, selling 20.4 percent of the 22,921 road motorcycles sold. It was followed by Honda (19.6 percent), Yamaha (15.4 percent), Kawasaki (11.5 percent) and BMW (7.3 percent).

In terms of road models, the Honda NBC110 was at the top of the charts, however it was once again the Kawasaki Ninja 300 that stood out with second, followed by the Harley-Davidson 500 Street, Yamaha MT-07L and Yamaha YZF-R3.

The top-selling machine in the supersport category was Honda’s CBR500R, above the CBR300R and Ducati’s popular 959 Panigale in third. Top of the 1000s was the Kawasaki ZX-10R in fourth, marginally in front of the Honda CBR1000RR.

Overall, Honda was the leading volume manufacturer again with 23.2 percent of the market, followed by Yamaha with 20.1 percent and Kawasaki at 10.1 percent. Suzuki and Harley-Davidson had an 8.9 percent share each.
