Cycle 360

An all-access Australian view of road racing, presented by Alpinestars.

There’s been much activity in the world of racing this week, both at the most elite world championship levels of the sport and in varying other capacities around the globe.

We finally see the Superbike World Championship resume as it returns to Lausitzring in Germany, with race one throwing up a massive surprise as Jonathan Rea DNF’d, showing that the series is far from over.

Just 26 points now separate Rea and Kawasaki teammate Tom Sykes in the title-race, so with three rounds and one race remaining, every result is becoming increasingly important.

Yesterday was a super-busy one for me with round one of Australian supercross on, so it will be nice tonight to kick back and watch race two. Hopefully it’s a good one!

It feels a little strange that the 2016/2017 Endurance World Championship is underway with the Bol d’Or 24 Hours in France, just weeks after the regular 2016 season ended.

The EWC season has all been moved forward, which will eventually result in next year’s Suzuka 8 Hours being the final round of the season. So far, only Broc Parkes (YART), Damian Cudlin (TSR Honda) and Alex Cudlin are in the series.

Alex actually entered the round with Team April Moto Motors Events Suzuki, in which he finished third in the 2016 standings, but was demoted to reserve rider for the round. In the end, just before the race, he switched to Penz 13 BMW.

I’ve always been a fan of the 8-hour in Japan, like many of us, but more recently the entire world championship has caught my wider attention. It’s intriguing to follow and there’s no doubt Aussies are really, really strong in the series.

British Superbike’s ‘Showdown’ sector is underway this weekend and it’s bound to be an awesome finish to the year, with Aussie Jason O’Halloran currently third in the standings entering the title fight.

That’s it from me for this week, time to recharge the batteries this afternoon and get set for another massive week at the Foremost Media office.
