Australian motorcycle sales have increased by 5.5 percent over the first three quarters of 2016 in comparison to the same period last year in what’s been another positive result for the industry locally.

Sales over the first three quarters totalled 79,237. Road bike sales accounted for the largest proportion of the new motorcycle market with a 43.9 percent share and have risen by 6.4 percent between January-September.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) CEO Tony Weber said that this was one of the best three-quarter sales outcomes for the industry for several years: “It’s terrific to see the motorcycle industry so vibrant and busy and we are looking forward to considerable sales activity as we lead into summer months.”

Harley-Davidson was again the top seller in the road motorcycle segment, selling 20.7 percent of the 34,778 road motorcycles sold to date this year. The US brand was followed by Honda, which sold 19.2 percent, Yamaha third with 16.7 percent, followed by Kawasaki at 10.6 percent and BMW with 6.8 percent.

Aside from the Honda NBC110 post bike, the Yamaha YZF-R3A led the combined road bike sales with 1196 sold, while in the ‘supersport’ segment it was the Honda CBR500R that topped the charts at 934 sales.
