Countdown: Revolutionary new sportsbikes

Five of the finest all-new models we're anticipating for 2017.

It’s shaping up to be a big year for sportsbikes in 2017, so with Intermot and EICMA complete for this season, CycleOnline.com.au has singled out five brand new, but very different, sportsbikes that will be standouts upon arrival. Sure, there are more on the way with varying updates, but these are the bunch that truly caught our attention upon unveil.

5. 2017 Kawasaki ZX-10RR:
One of the highest profile homologation specials to be unleashed, Superbike world champions Kawasaki will take full advantage of the striking new ZX-10RR for 2017. With just 500 made available worldwide – we’re uncertain if it will come to Australia just yet – it has RR styling features, lightweight Marchesini rims, Pirelli Supercorsa SP tyres, a modified cylinder head to accept high-lift cams (not included), DLC-coated tappets, reinforced crankcases and bidirectional Kawasaki Quick Shifter. All of this on top of the glorious standard ZX-10R that was introduced this year.

4. 2017 Honda CBR1000RR SP/SP2:
Honda has had its fair share of success with the current CBR1000RR that was initially introduced for 2008, however the 2017 comes as a much-welcomed new model for Honda fans and race teams globally. Lighter than the outgoing model, making more power and loaded with cutting-edge electronics, this new Fireblade could be called retro for its reinterpretation of the original Fireblade’s focus on lightness, power and control. And most recently Honda confirmed that there will be three new versions with the addition of a standard edition.

3. 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6:
With aggressive new styling and brimming with technological innovation, Yamaha’s 2017 YZF-R6 has redefined the supersport class just as it did back in 2006. To underline the company’s commitment to the supersport segment, the new YZF-R6 has been created using some of the latest YZF-R1 derived chassis technology together with cutting-edge electronics. With newly developed low-drag bodywork and an aggressive look that bears all the characteristics of Yamaha’s thoroughbred R-series DNA, the new YZF-R6 has arrived.

2. 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000/R:
Intermot marked the ‘second’ (remember the concept we saw last year?) time we’ve seen the new GSX-Rs, but look into the details and this thing is something else. To get high power and maintain good low-to-mid-range torque, Suzuki has slotted in a variable valve timing system. Brimming with electronics, chassis and engine innovations, the GSX-R is poised to be one of the most cracking new rides of the year and we’re tipping it will remind us exactly why the superbike model has been so successful for Suzuki for more than a decade.

1. 2017 Ducati 1299 Superleggera:
One of five new models released by Ducati at EICMA, the Superleggera was the first cab off the rank for the show and what a machine it is! With a carbon-fibre frame, swingarm, sub-frame, wheels and bodywork, the 1299 Superleggera will be produced in a run of only 500 units. Powered by a 160kW, twin-cylinder engine, it is the most powerful version of Ducati’s Superquadro mill and runs the latest electronics, top-notch suspension and brakes all weighing in at 167kg fully-fuelled.
