The topical aerodynamic winglets may have been banned for 2017, however Movistar Yamaha has been the first to break out a newly-developed internal-type design at the Sepang MotoGP test.

While specifics remain scarce – and with Ducati at least expected to reveal something similar at Qatar’s opener – the latest M1 has scoops on each side of the fairing within the region of the outlawed wings of last year.

Movistar Yamaha also introduced an updated frame during day two, amounting in positive feedback from both Valentino Rossi and new teammate Maverick Viñales on Tuesday, despite weather making for a slow start to proceedings in the morning.

“They both tested and compared the new fairing and new frame,” team director Massimo Meregalli said. “We also made time to look further into improving rear tyre life, with positive results. So far the feedback from the riders has been good, so we are confident about the material that we are testing.”

Viñales was one of just two riders to dip into the 1m59s bracket, ending second behind Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Andrea Iannone, while Rossi continued his testing program on the way to fourth overall.
