ASBK race stoppage regulations adjusted ahead of round two

A key revision has been made within the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli supplementary regulations prior to this weekend’s second round at Wakefield Park.

Race stoppages will now be similar to the world championship, where the finishing positions of two-part races will be more simply determined by the race order when the final chequered flag falls.

At Phillip Island, the third race was red-flagged following two laps and split into two parts, combining overall times from each race to determine positions. On that occasion, Wayne Maxwell crossed the line first in part two, however a calculated Daniel Falzon’s combined time earned him the race win.

There was some confusion at Phillip Island’s opener among the front-runners, with Maxwell dropped to fourth on that occasion due to his track positioning in the first part, while Falzon was close enough in third at the finish of part two to complete a clean-sweep of the weekend.

Moving forward, positions within the first part (after more than two laps but less than 75 percent) will determine the grid for the second race as usual, but the final classification will come down to the final running order across the finish-line of part two. If a race is stopped with less than two laps completed, original grid positions will be in use for the restart.

The updated regulation will come into effect from the first standalone event of the year at Wakefield Park in New South Wales this weekend on 17-19 March.
