Yamaha Motor Australia press release:
It was a red-letter day for the Yamaha Racing Team and Wayne Maxwell as they dominated proceedings at round three of the Australian Superbike Championship at Winton last weekend.
Maxwell took all before him in a near perfect performance and has thrown himself and his thundering YZF – R1M back into championship contention.
But there is a lot more going on for Yamaha then just the factory team. There a host of riders spread across every class and flying the Yamaha flag with pride.
John Redding – YRT / YRD Team Manager
“It’s great for both Wayne and the Yamaha Racing Team to bounce back the way we did at Winton. Round one at Phillip Island was probably one of our worst rounds for a while but there were some positive signs at Wakefield Park and some progress was made there but the weather also hindered our results. Thankfully, the weather didn’t get in the way this weekend so it was a good clear weekend.
“I couldn’t wish for anything better than a weekend like Winton. Wayne was able to qualify on pole, break lap records and won both races by comfortable margins so overall, it was a fantastic weekend for both the Wayne and the whole team.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how the Wayne and the team go in July at the fourth round of the ASBK championship.”
It was also a good day for YRT supported riders Cru Halliday and Daniel Falzon. Cru was very consistent all weekend and finished on the podium which is a great result and good reward for his work and the team he has put together.
“Daniel still holds the lead in the championship and is riding well. He will continue to develop and learn as he deals with managing a championship like this so it’s great for his development.”
“In the Supersport division, Sam Lambert is doing a good job for us and had another good weekend at Winton to finish third. He has some tough opposition in the class but is riding well and will continue to improve.
“The 300 Production class is almost the best race to watch as there is a big field and it’s just full of action. There is great racing, some crashes and as with most young riders, a lot of inconsistency but its making for a great series.
“The overall picture looks quite good for YRD with our riders holding down the first four positions in the championship but there is still plenty of racing to go.”
“It’s also good to see the progress of the R3 Cup. After its introductory year in 2016, rider numbers have grown this year and sales of the Yamaha R3 and the race kits have also increased so it looks promising for the future.
“The Junior R-15 Cup is shaping up well and much like the R3 Cup, it is slowly building momentum. There are some great riders in the field and the racing up the front is tight so between the R15 and the R3 events, we now have a great breeding ground for aspiring racers.”
Round four of the ASBK well be held at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Circuit on July 6-9.
