The Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team has revealed Davide Giugliano will pilot the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2 at the ninth round of the 2017 FIM World Superbike Championship in Germany, set to be hosted by the Lausiztring circuit on 18-20 August.

Giugliano undertook testing with the outfit last week at the Lausiztring venue, where team manager Marco Chini named him as a capable candidate to fulfil the position opened up by the late Nicky Hayden.

“I’m really happy with this opportunity to race at Lausitzring with the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team,” said Giugliano. “After the good test we had there last week, I was hoping to get a chance to compete with them and I’m grateful to have received it.

“I’m back to a good level of form and cannot wait to get started. I would like to thank Honda and Ten Kate for making this happen and I will do my best to make this opportunity worthwhile for all of us.”

It’s understood the deal is for one round only, where he will race alongside team regular Stefan Bradl. Giugliano is the second rider to make a guest appearance with the team, as American Jake Gagne grasped the opportunity to race under the factory Honda flag at Laguna Seca.
