Alternative focus in testing results in career-first podium for Queenslander.
Australian Superstock 1000 (STK1000) European Championship contender Mike Jones believes a test day at Lausitzring marked a turning point in his debut season, which ultimately saw him a claim a career-first podium at the venue last weekend in sixth round of the series.
Jones completed the weekend in second behind fellow Aruba.it Racing – Junior Team member Michael Ruben Rinaldi, leaving the former ASBK champion overwhelmed with emotions after what was a self-described tactical race.
“The feeling is fantastic, I’m ecstatic to get my first podium in the STK1000 championship,” Jones expressed. “Of course there are a lot of things to take into account, but I’m so happy to give a bit of repayment to the team and show an indication of my potential.
“Today’s race was quite tactical, we’ve been patient and it paid off. I think that the test here a Lausitz marked a turning point for me this year, as I focused on my riding more than the bike.
“I’m looking forward to continue this momentum and improve a little bit more if possible. The help and support from my family, team and sponsors is what makes it worthwhile.”
The Queensland-native is now positioned sixth in the standings as the series heads to Portimao in Portugal for round seven on 15-17 September.
