Movistar Yamaha has confirmed MotoGP World Championship contender Valentino Rossi will sit out this weekend’s 13th round of the prestigious series in Misano, Italy.

Rossi suffered a crash while while enduro training, resulting in displaced fractures of the tibia and fibula of his right leg, which saw him undergo successful surgery late last week.

It’s expected the multi-time champion will be sidelined for up to four to five weeks, ultimately seeing him return in time for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island in October, although Yamaha is yet to reveal exactly what rounds following Misano that he’ll sit out.

The factory MotoGP team will field a sole rider of Maverick Viñales this weekend, who currently sits third in the championship standings, just 13 points shy of points leader Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team).
