Motorcycling Australia (MA) has announced the Moto3 and 125 GP categories will lose national championship status next year, effective of 1 January 2018.

The change was determined by the commission, rules and tech committee that Australian championship status for Moto3 and 125 GP classes will be removed.

The Moto3 division will now merge with the senior competition 250 GP Mono class to give all 250cc four-stroke machines a platform to continue competing. All classes will still be eligible for state and club championships if applicable.

MA stated the decision was based on the decreasing numbers in entries of the Moto3 class and that the growth of the category has been too slow for it to be considered viable as a championship class.

The 125 GP division has been removed from championship status due to it no longer reflecting a current international class and that 125 GP machines are no longer being produced or replaced with new models for competition use.
